SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR TIME ONLINE
Here is a sample schedule you could follow for the 1/2 hour time together:
Reconnect: What's been one good/"high" and one challenge/"low" of past week? (You share yours too!) Was there a holiday or special event recently? Ask about that too—(don’t assume your student celebrates holidays, ask instead if they did)
Play “Did You Know That…” (see menu below)
Once Upon A Time: create a story by alternating each sentance...you write it down so you can read the whole thing back to them after you each have a few turns!
Scavenger Hunt: Compile a list of 10 items and see whether you or your mentee can find them first (suggested to go one at a time): a book, a shoe, something orange, a marker, something blue, a stuffed animal, something living (plant, sibling), a sheet of toilet paper, something edible, a photo, a piece of candy, etc.
Read A Book to them (Here's the link you could play during your session, even if you don't screen share that is read aloud. It's on gratitude as we head towards Thanksgiving…but many books will come up on the right sidebar if you navigate to this YouTube page.) Ask them reading comprehension questions or connect the story to their life (in this story you can ask them to name 3 things they're thankful for after the story is read).
Show and Tell something fun from your house
Drawing Game Roll-a-face (kids got dice from us in one of their Summer Care Packages--they could roll for both of you, or if you have a die you could roll for both people and describe what's on the face chart--wait until the end to share your faces!)

Screen Sharing: *If you and your student's technology has worked well the last two weeks, and you feel comfortable adding an activity that involves screen sharing, then please feel free to try that this week (and remember we always have the classroom open 15 minutes early if you need/want to make sure you're good to go).
**If you screen share remember to:
1) Direct your student to click on your initials when they pop up
2) Remind them after you're done sharing to click the waffle icon again (it automatically goes grey and they can't see the table you're at, unless their waffle is blue)
Here is a list of fun virtual field trips!
There's also Animal cameras at the San Diego zoo--see what the hippos or giraffes are up to on the live webcam! This could be something you check into each week and see which animals are awake.
Here's a lovely book about taking a chance that you could share as it's read and then talk about.
Or you and your student can ride on splash mountain at Disney World.
